The toughest city in the world was Shanghai. The time was the 1930s. The streets were ruled by gangs. Violent gang wars, murder, rape, and robbery were the order of the day. The night belonged to roaming gangs of toughs. In charge of the Shanghai Municipal Police, Capt. W. E. Fairbairn and his partner, Capt. Eric Anthony Sykes, were determined to reclaim the streets for the citizenry.
Both Fairbairn and Sykes engaged in over two hundred incidents where violent close combat occurred with criminal elements.
These battle scarred veterans were experts in all types of close quarter fighting with and without weapons.
In the United States, the FBI continued training their agents after WWII, right up to date.
Recently, there has been new interest in the methods of Fairbairn and Sykes, due to the close quarter threats officers are being involved in The New York Police Department, one of the most dangerous Police Departments, in the US, have taken on this method of training for their officers.
